3 Ways Mindfulness Can Help Keep You Fit for Life in Apex

Nenetus Girl meditating, FDPEvery Triangle and Apex resident has a busy schedule and fast-paced life. This is 2016. Time flies. It is almost March! Can you believe it? This “go-go-go” mentality with home, school, and work may be productive, but it’s also important, at times, to slow down and be mindful of everything around you. Now, what exactly is “mindfulness”?

Psychology Today defines it as “a state of active and open attention on the present.” When applied to fitness here at Fit for Life 24 in Apex, it can make a big difference in performance and health! Now, how can those in the Triangle apply mindfulness to their fitness routine?

Here are three ways mindfulness will keep members at Fit for Life 24 mentally fit as well:

  • Exercise a sense of gratitude: Practicing gratitude has several scientifically-proven benefits. Why not reap some of them while at Fit for Life 24? Appreciate what the body is able to accomplish. Be thankful for the movement, progress and achievement. Whether today’s workout is alongside one of our personal trainers, in a class, or on the treadmill, appreciate the amazing work the body is doing.
  • Consider how workouts make the body stronger: As workouts picks up intensity, don’t allow the mind to wander to stressful work situations or the daily to-do list, stay present in the moment. Feel exertion. Appreciate that 30 minutes of an elevated heart rate is making your cardiovascular system stronger and healthier. Instead of counting down the minutes until the end of the workout, remember that exercise reduces stress; accomplishing this workout will make the rest of the day even more productive. And sleep is more peaceful and restful. The New York Times has even reported on a recent study stating that those who are more mindful and focused during workout receive more satisfaction.
  • Think about nutrition: The meal hits the table and in less than five minutes, the plate is empty. Eating food quickly doesn’t allow enjoyment of what it offers. Extend the exercise of mindfulness to every meal. Chew more slowly, and the body suggests when it is full. Several studies have also encouraged people to turn off the television and the smartphones while having a meal. Focus on the food and company and truly enjoy.
