3 Ways Stretching Ensures Health for Fit for Life 24

Our members at Fit for Life 24 in Apex experience many benefits of cardio and strength training. From treadmills and our elliptical trainers, to our daily fitness classes and weight-lifting, there are many ways to get results at Fit for Life 24. While working toward goals, members should also keep in mind the benefits and the importance of stretching.

Fit for Life 24 offers three ways stretching creates positive effects on the body, mind, and overall performance:

  • Increases range of motion: Tight muscles can limit range of motion. Getting into a good routine of stretching will boost one’s flexibility and allow movements to feel more fluid. While there is debate on whether or not stretching before and after exercise prevents injury, Fit Day reports that the flexibility gained from stretching is helpful for one’s balance and coordination, two key components of fitness!
  • Improves posture: If muscles are constantly tense, it can lead to poor posture. Strengthening the back and shoulders can certainly help to improve posture, and stretching may also benefit our members looking to improve their posture by keeping the back in better alignment.
  • Decreases stress: Give the tense muscles from stress and work some relief with just 10-15 minutes of stretching. Take a moment to be mindful of where there is tenseness, and then focus on those areas when stretching. Be sure to breathe normally, and feel the body’s tension ease.

Stretching helps the body feel its best; but it’s not recommended to kick start one’s workout. While it may seem counterintuitive to those who have heard otherwise, the Mayo Clinic cautions people to avoid stretching as a warm-up. Instead, “warm up [to stretching] with light walking, jogging or biking at low intensity for five to 10 minutes.” Stretching can also be done following a workout.
