3 Ways Mindfulness Can Help Keep You Fit for Life in Apex

Nenetus Girl meditating, FDPEvery Triangle and Apex resident has a busy schedule and fast-paced life. This is 2016. Time flies. It is almost March! Can you believe it? This “go-go-go” mentality with home, school, and work may be productive, but it’s also important, at times, to slow down and be mindful of everything around you. Now, what exactly is “mindfulness”?

Psychology Today defines it as “a state of active and open attention on the present.” When applied to fitness here at Fit for Life 24 in Apex, it can make a big difference in performance and health! Now, how can those in the Triangle apply mindfulness to their fitness routine?

Here are three ways mindfulness will keep members at Fit for Life 24 mentally fit as well:

  • Exercise a sense of gratitude: Practicing gratitude has several scientifically-proven benefits. Why not reap some of them while at Fit for Life 24? Appreciate what the body is able to accomplish. Be thankful for the movement, progress and achievement. Whether today’s workout is alongside one of our personal trainers, in a class, or on the treadmill, appreciate the amazing work the body is doing.
  • Consider how workouts make the body stronger: As workouts picks up intensity, don’t allow the mind to wander to stressful work situations or the daily to-do list, stay present in the moment. Feel exertion. Appreciate that 30 minutes of an elevated heart rate is making your cardiovascular system stronger and healthier. Instead of counting down the minutes until the end of the workout, remember that exercise reduces stress; accomplishing this workout will make the rest of the day even more productive. And sleep is more peaceful and restful. The New York Times has even reported on a recent study stating that those who are more mindful and focused during workout receive more satisfaction.
  • Think about nutrition: The meal hits the table and in less than five minutes, the plate is empty. Eating food quickly doesn’t allow enjoyment of what it offers. Extend the exercise of mindfulness to every meal. Chew more slowly, and the body suggests when it is full. Several studies have also encouraged people to turn off the television and the smartphones while having a meal. Focus on the food and company and truly enjoy.

Note how mindfulness affects every workout. Tell us on our Facebook page!

4 Unseen yet Important Benefits with Fit for Life 24

Fitness, Ambro, FDP

It is February and Valentine’s Day is tomorrow! And our very own Sir Walter Wally, the Triangle’s favorite groundhog, has predicted an early spring for 2016. Wow, are we are all excited. Here in Apex, we are really looking forward to the warmer weather. It certainly looks like everything is coming up roses for all of our members. Many of the FFL24 team has done a great job of getting into a good workout routine to slim down or maintain the proper weight they need for a long life and great health.

We are happy our members are setting and reaching individual goal. While our bodies are getting stronger, they’re also earning other benefits. At Fit for Life 24, being fit can do more than help each member’s physique.

Check out these four important benefits, from our owner and personal trainers; workouts are always an investment:

  • Working out is good for your mental health. Working out releases endorphins. What does that mean? An improved mood! If you are feeling stressed or worn out, hit the treadmill, or step right into our fitness class schedule. Working out can often boost mood and reduce anxiety levels.
  • Deflect disease! Lower your risk of heart disease, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, and certain cancers by staying fit. Commit to two hours or more of “moderate-intensity aerobic activity” per week to claim the benefits. According to the CDC, “The more physical activity you do, the lower your risk will be.”
  • Brain boost without the caffeine. Many people require a high level of focus to perform well in their careers or academic pursuits. Get a brain boost by working out. It’s proven to increase focus and energy. Feeling unproductive after work? Stop by Fit for Life 24 and sweat out the afternoon blues. Members who do it leave energized and rejuvenated, ready to take on the rest of the evening’s responsibilities. Even Forbes recognized the “6 Ways Exercise Makes You Smarter.” Plus, a prolonged active lifestyle has links to warding off diseases like Alzheimer ’s disease.
  • Improved sleep quality. Tossing and turning or not feeling well-rested in the morning? A study concluded that those who put in “150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity” each week reported a 65% “improvement in sleep quality.” Furthermore, those who were more active also felt more alert throughout the day.

Working out has a multitude of benefits. Before you skip your workout, think of how grateful your body will be if you commit to caring for it with consistent exercise. Have you noticed these benefits after your workout? Let us know on our Facebook page!

5 Ways to Keep Those Personal Fitness Resolutions

FFL 360 editedIt’s almost February. In a blink of an eye in fitness time, it will be spring, and we all will want to get in shape for summer. Why wait? Fit for Life in Apex knows that now is the time to keep that New Year’s Resolution. Many of our members have committed to the continuous goal of leading healthier lives in 2016, but the resolve to improve might be starting to wear off for some here in our Apex membership. It will be cooler for the next couple of months and it’s tempting to give in to a cozy night at home. We are all back to work and the long days and the often stressful commute can create multiple excuses not to exercise. Between the allure of another night in front of the TV and giving into exhaustion, a lot of us need some extra motivation.

Fit for Life 24 offers five ways to get in gear as we head to summer:

  1. Incentives: Here at Fit for Life 24 in Apex, it is a good time to meet with one of our personal trainers. Monthly realistic goals are necessary. At the end of every month, if goals have been reached, figure out a reward; maybe a new pair of workout shoes or a stress reducing massage. Better yet, each time you’re tempted to buy an unhealthy snack at the convenience store, or the machine in the cafeteria, keep that money right in that pocket. At the end of the month, use it to fund the incentive.
  2. Train with an expert: There is power in using our personal trainers Not sure where to start? Do you have a few “problem” areas that are not changing regardless of the effort? Don’t get discouraged—schedule a workout session with one of our trainers. Fit for Life 24 means results!
  3. Create a routine: It takes 21 days to make or break a habit. Swap out nights in front of the TV for an hour at Fit for Life. Instead of plopping down in front of HGTV for the night, follow one of the channels most popular designers—Joanna Gaines—on her fitness journey. Make a commitment to work out every day for 21 days. Make it a routine to get to the gym. If the thought of pounding another mile on the treadmill seems daunting, drop into one of our fitness classes. There are plenty of ways to keep your workout fresh and fun at Fit for Life!
  4. Eat healthy meals: Don’t reach for the sugary treat when the mid-day hunger strikes. Pre-pack a high-protein, healthy snack, like an apple and peanut butter for energy. That chocolate chip cookie might look good at 3:30, but it will just lead to a crash in energy, which won’t help get as you head for that workout.
  5. Invest in a fitness tracker: Fitness trackers have become increasingly popular—and for a good reason! Meeting the recommended daily goals doesn’t just feel satisfying; it’s good for health too! Many fitness trackers offer motivating visuals, encouraging reminders, and friendly competition. Looking for the right fit? Check out Wareable’s in-depth descriptions of the latest in fitness trackers.

How are you staying motivated in 2016? Comment on our Facebook page and let us know how you’re maintaining your fitness goals this winter!

Remember, tomorrow is our Smart Fit Boot Camp 360! Join us onsite at Fit for Life 24 for the ultimate challenge!

4 Simple Ways to Get Back into the Fitness Routine for ‘16

Stock Images, FDP FFLHappy New Year! It’s a new year and a fresh start across Apex. If the “evil” weight scale after all the holiday get-togethers is less than encouraging, don’t lose heart. It is common for people to gain a little weight over the holiday season. Between the parties and the traveling, fitness and eating routines can get broken. Don’t let it stay that way as we head to February! It is time to take charge of personal fitness and health with these tips for getting “lean and mean” again in 2016.

Our very popular personal trainers here at Fit for Life 24 in Apex NC offer four very simple ways to get the “groove” back in 2016:

  • Eat a healthy diet: There is no quick-fix for lifelong health, so save the money and skip the latest juice cleanse! There are many helpful ways to track your diet too, and plenty of smartphone apps to help novices and experienced exercisers alike make healthy choices while grocery shopping. Indulge in the occasional splurge, but be mindful of what poor choices are doing to the body.
  • Get moving: Can’t run a 5K yet? Don’t throw in the towel! Find a fitness routine that works and grow to the goal. Make it one that incorporates both strength and cardio training. Fit for Life 24 is the perfect place to find that just-right routine because of its variety of equipment, our personal trainers, and our array of classes. If a regular run on the treadmill works, great! If not, check out a cardio class. There is something for everyone at Fit for Life24 Apex!
  • Try the buddy system: Find another motivated and reliable FFL 24 member to work out with a couple times a week. This is the perfect partnering to help keep up with accountability; especially if getting back into a solid fitness routine is difficult. Agree on a schedule that works for two, and stick to it! Feeling competitive? Challenge another two friends to compete against the two of you. Feeling the synergy and competition will be even more reason to lace up your sneakers.
  • Create goals: Pace every routine. Make realistic goals and set a timeline to achieve them. Not sure where to start? Discuss personal goals with one of our experienced trainers! Keeping these goals in mind will not only help keep up the motivation; they will help to prevent any New Year’s plateauing in fitness routines. The key variable is results.

Make it a great New Year for maintaining a healthy lifestyle in 2016. Fit for Life 24 in Apex is here for every member and every fitness goal. Take a tour of our fitness center at 809 Perry Road at NC 55 and chat with a staff member to see how Fit for Life 24 can help with health and fitness-oriented resolutions this year. We make the difference!

3 Reasons Not To Wait until 2016 to Start Working Out

2016- stuart miles- freedigitalphotos.net“Getting in shape” is one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions year after year. Why? For many Triangle residents, the New Year equals a chance to start fresh, and there’s something about starting fresh seems to make eliminating bad habits a little easier. Remember, there is no time like the present, and in terms of health and fitness, the sooner changes are made, the better. Life is too important.

Our Holiday Season spirited personal trainers at Fit for Life 24 in Apex share the best reasons to start working out now:

  • Under pressure: By starting a fitness routine now, instead of at the New Year, it takes some of the pressure off. People tend to set lofty, often unrealistic, goals for their new year’s resolutions, and these actually set them up for failure. By building a base for good habits now, any new goals added in January will simply be small (more achievable) tweaks, not a full on lifestyle change.
  • A different mindset: When thinking of working out as a chore, it only makes sense that waiting seems like the best option. Instead of a task to be crossed off the list, try thinking of exercise as something more positive (even fun, maybe?). By casting health and wellness in a better light, many people will find they just can’t wait to get started!
  • Avoid the rush: Join Fit for Life 24, and it will become apparent on the first visit that many other people have the exact same idea at the start of the year. It is important to join now when holiday happenings keep our fitness center in Apex a little less busy. With fewer crowds, it will be easier to understand the new equipment, try a new group class, or get one-on-one personal attention from one of our excellent trainers.

Waiting to start a new fitness routine at the holidays is understandable. After all, (almost) everyone is doing it! Remember, waiting means delaying valuable (and visible) results.

Wouldn’t you rather start the New Year a step ahead, instead of playing catch up after the holidays? Call or stop in to Fit for Life 24 in Apex today and let our personal trainers show you how to make your New Year’s resolution an all year long practice.

From all of us to all of you, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone!

4 Cool Weather Exercise Tips for the Triangle

Warmly dressed exerciser-imagerymajestic-freedigitalphotos.netWinter weather is almost here in the Triangle, and that means many exercisers are heading indoors to Fit for Life 24. While our climate controlled gym and fitness center provide the best shelter from the elements, it’s nice to get some fresh air every once in a while.

Lower temperatures don’t have to mean an end to outdoor walks, jogs and workouts. The personal trainers at Fit for Life 24 in Apex suggest the following four tips for staying safe and comfortable:

  • Assess health issues: Certain health conditions can be worsened by cold weather, like heart conditions, asthma, or Raynaud’s disease. It’s always best to check with a doctor to find out if special precautions should be taken.
  • Check out the wind chill: Wind can penetrate clothing, negating the layer of warm air between the body and the clothes. Additionally, exposed skin is more vulnerable to frostbite on colder windy days. If the wind chill heads below freezing, consider the right clothing and protection.
  • Layer up: Surprisingly, many people inadvertently dress too warmly when suiting up for a cold weather workout. In lower temperatures, evaporating sweat can filter heat from the body and contribute to feeling cold. Use a moisture wicking material closest to the skin, followed by an insulating layer of fleece or wool. Finally, add an outer layer that’s water resistant yet breathable.
  • Know the warning signs: Frostbite and hypothermia are two very serious cold weather afflictions. And they can happen right here in Apex North Carolina. Numbness or a stinging feeling can signal frostbite, while slurred speech and loss of coordination point to hypothermia. In either case, get out of the cold right away and seek assistance.

Regardless of the time of year, outdoor exercise provides many physical and mental benefits. In fact, cold weather can actually intensify these effects. With the right safety precautions and some advance preparations, it’s no sweat to get moving outdoors this month!

Are chilly icy winds keeping you glued to the couch? Cold weather exercise doesn’t appeal to everyone, and that’s okay. The personal trainers at Fit for Life 24 in Apex are here to help and at Fit for Life 24, we will keep the fitness center just the right temperature for you. Call or stop in today!

4 Painless Ways to Fit in Workouts During the Holidays

Turkey Watching TV- vectorolie- freedigitalphotos.netThanksgiving is the holiday that starts the fitness challenge. No matter what, Christmas and New Years Day are challenging in terms of health and fitness for all our members at Fit for Life 24. Family gatherings, cocktail parties, and just snuggling up at home under a warm blanket all take their toll on energy levels, calorie counts, and waistlines. The phenomenon of holiday weight gain causes many people to simply write off their fitness plans from November till January and gain that average of seven pounds.

However, our FFL 24 personal trainers believe it is very doable to make room in a healthy lifestyle for all of that holiday cheer—and still fit into the same size clothing come January 2nd!

Fit for Life 24 offers the following four holiday strategies that will keep everything status quo as we step on that scale:

  • Redefine traditions: The Triangle area features an enormous number of active holiday events, most of them family friendly. Start a new tradition by signing up for a “turkey trot” race, or checking out downtown Raleigh’s ice-skating rink. A walk or two in the crisp air works too.
  • Get guests involved: When hosting friends and family, many people are (rightly) tempted to skip workouts and focus on togetherness. Why not invite guests to experience a favorite group exercise class? And Fit for Life 24 is always open with convenient staff hours every week.
  • Work in some mini workouts: When shopping for gifts, take an extra lap around the mall, and use the stairs instead of the escalator. At the company party, be the first one on the dance floor, and burn off one of those party drinks.
  • Choose a goal: There’s just over a month from Thanksgiving to New Year’s, and a short-term, specific goal could be just keep motivation steady. Focus on mastering a new yoga pose or shaving a minute off of the time it takes to run a mile.

With long hours of darkness and not-so-nice weather, the couch and television can monopolize even the most dedicated fitness lover’s time. With a little planning and creativity, anyone can make fitness a part of the holiday celebration, instead of the last thing on the to-do list.

Looking for innovative ways to sneak fitness into even the busiest daily routine? The personal trainers at Fit For Life 24 in Apex can show you how. Call or stop in today!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

3 Simple Ways to Recover from a the Holiday Diet Fiasco

FFL TurkeyNow that it’s November, with the holiday season finally upon us in the Triangle, many of us are really looking for all the holiday parties that often come with some unwelcome pounds. Between all the wonderful drinks, food, and treats within arm’s reach and the increasingly stressful and hectic schedules, diet and exercise often take a back seat for many in Apex and the Triangle.

Our ownership and staff at Fit for Life 24 in Apex want our health-conscious Triangle members to know that urges happen. Yet, it doesn’t have to derail an entire year’s worth of workouts. Here’s three simple ways to get back on track:

  • Don’t overcompensate: A holiday binge can often lead to feelings of regret, but don’t soothe emotions by eating yet another piece of pie or plate of homemade Christmas cookies. At the other end of the spectrum, swearing off food for an entire day or suddenly upping the intensity of a workout can have just as many negative effects.
  • Plan and schedule every healthy meal and workout: Skipping meals will likely lead to more binging. Instead, hit the reset button by stocking up and preparing a few favorite, go-to healthy meals. Likewise, scheduling time for a few good workouts that help gain that feeling of control.
  • Gain some new perspective from Fit for Life 24 in Apex: Realize that a healthy lifestyle is a long-term commitment for every member of Fit for Life. It’s always more than a glass of eggnog or an entire afternoon spent in front of the television eating candy canes. Minimize the physical weight gain; never dwell on the negatives, and practice a bit of self-love. Getting back on the nutrition and exercise wagon is as simple as allowing for some forgiveness; you are a good person!

It’s easy to lose track of fitness goals during the holiday season. It happens to even the most dedicated fitness enthusiasts. The key to recovery is to keep negative emotions in check. Assessing the situation from a neutral distance will help in the formulation of a practical, rational plan for regrouping and recommitment.

Stop holiday weight gain before it starts. Commit to a fitness plan today! Call or stop in to Fit for Life 24 in Apex and let our personal trainers show you the best ways to enjoy the holidays while staying healthy.

4 Reasons to Never Skip a Fitness Warmup

lacing up shoes- mapichai- freedigitalphotos.netSqueezing a workout into a busy day is a real challenge. It is no surprise. When Triangle exercisers are short on time, the warm up is often skipped. However, preparation is an important part of any Fit for Life 24 workout routine and serves several useful purposes.

Our Fit For Life 24 personal trainers share these four important reasons why getting ready for a workout can be just as important as the workout itself:

  • Warming up enhances performance: Getting the body warmed up increases blood flow and body temperature, boosting the benefits of any workout. Increased blood and oxygen to the muscles means better performance, and a higher temperature means that muscles can contract and relax faster.
  • Warming up may prevent injury: A brief warm up prepares the body for more strenuous exercise, minimizing the potential for muscle tears and other injuries. Again, increasing blood flow to the muscles better prepares them for the harder work to come.
  • Warming up slowly increasing heart rate: Warming up gets the heart pumping, and for good reason. Gradually preparing the cardiovascular system for an increase in activity helps prevent a sudden increase in blood pressure.
  • Warming up prepares both mind and body: Warming up does more than prepare the body; it also helps our Fit for Life 24 members to get in the right frame of mind to successfully complete a workout. Taking a few minutes to get pumped up and optimistic about the hard work ahead can help maintain motivation throughout the exercise session.

Just because time is so valuable in everyone’s schedule, it does not mean that the warm up should be eliminated. Five minutes are all most people need to benefit from a low or moderate intense workout. For more strenuous exercises, ten minutes is ideal. The best part is that any pre-fitness conditioning is simple. It can be as easy as performing a lower intensity version of the intended exercise.

If our members need assistance in pre-exercise preparation, our personal trainers can help design the ideal warm up, cool down, and entire workout routine? Call or stop in to Fit for Life 24 in Apex today and let our knowledgeable and experienced personal trainers assess your fitness plan here in Apex!

4 Nutrition Tips to Complement Fit for Life 24’s Fitness Routine

Healthy Foods-Stockimages- freedigitalphotos.netMost Triangle residents know that a nutritious diet is a key part of a healthy lifestyle, but it is so important that it bears repeating. No matter if a person has been exercising for years or is just starting out, what he or she eats (and drinks) has a direct impact on the results of their workouts

The personal trainers at Fit for Life 24 want to make sure Triangle fitness goers are making the most of their hard work by following these four simple steps:

  • Get calories from solids, not liquids: Wasting calories on sugary juices, sodas, and fancy coffee drinks is a sure-fire way to reduce a workout’s effectiveness. Craving the sweet refreshment of fruit juice? Grab an orange or apple instead.
  • Eat more, not less: A body needs consistent fuel to power an active lifestyle. Skimping on meals isn’t going to cut it, even if weight loss is the ultimate goal. Cut too many calories, and the body goes into starvation mode, hanging on to every gram of fat and sugar. Instead, try five or six small meals per day, spaced a couple of hours apart.
  • Breakfast of champions: A morning meal jump-starts metabolism and refuels a body that’s been hard at work restoring itself throughout the night. The ideal breakfast contains protein and complex carbohydrates. Are you a non-morning person? Even a small meal, like a smoothie or toast with nut butter is advantageous.
  • Get plenty of protein: Protein takes a decent amount of calories to digest. It also helps to repair muscles used during exercise, making them stronger. Every meal should contain some sort of protein, and this doesn’t necessarily mean chicken or eggs. Try salsa featuring black beans, or a handful of chia seeds added to a salad.

Even the most dedicated exerciser can unknowingly sabotage a quality Fit for Life 24 workout with less-than-stellar nutritional decisions. What starts out as a craving for a simple muffin or can of soda may, overtime, reduce and even negate workout results.

Whether exercise means running, playing a team sport or practicing yoga, fueling the body in the right way with the right foods is essential.

Feel like something is missing from your workout? Call or stop in to Fit for Life 24 in Apex today and let our knowledgeable and experienced personal trainers assess your fitness plan!
