4 Cool Weather Exercise Tips for the Triangle

While our climate controlled gym and fitness center provide the best shelter from the elements, it’s nice to get some fresh air every once in a while.

Lower temperatures don’t have to mean an end to outdoor walks, jogs and workouts. The personal trainers at Fit for Life 24 in Apex suggest the following four tips for staying safe and comfortable:

  • Assess health issues: Certain health conditions can be worsened by cold weather, like heart conditions, asthma, or Raynaud’s disease. It’s always best to check with a doctor to find out if special precautions should be taken. 
  • Check out the wind chill: Wind can penetrate clothing, negating the layer of warm air between the body and the clothes. Additionally, exposed skin is more vulnerable to frostbite on colder windy days. If the wind chill heads below freezing, consider the right clothing and protection. 
  • Layer up: Surprisingly, many people inadvertently dress too warmly when suiting up for a cold weather workout. In lower temperatures, evaporating sweat can filter heat from the body and contribute to feeling cold. Use a moisture wicking material closest to the skin, followed by an insulating layer of fleece or wool. Finally, add an outer layer that’s water resistant yet breathable. 
  • Know the warning signs: Frostbite and hypothermia are two very serious cold weather afflictions. And they can happen right here in Apex North Carolina. Numbness or a stinging feeling can signal frostbite, while slurred speech and loss of coordination point to hypothermia. In either case, get out of the cold right away and seek assistance.

Regardless of the time of year, outdoor exercise provides many physical and mental benefits. In fact, cold weather can actually intensify these effects. With the right safety precautions and some advance preparations, it’s no sweat to get moving outdoors this month!
