  • Acknowledge the situation: Some weeks are just more frantic and stressful than others, and it can take all a person’s energy just to get through each day. Simply accepting that not every single day is going to be ideal for exercise (so not aiming for 100% perfection) is going to be a major mental breakthrough for most people.
  • Prioritize goals and activities: The to-do list never ends, and there’s always more to be done at work and at home. Figure out where exercise fits on the priority list, and adjust other goals accordingly with fitness in mind. It may not be possible to workout, cook a gourmet dinner, walk the dogs, and clean the house five days a week. And that’s okay.
  • Plan carefully: There’s bound to be free time in even the busiest schedule. Conduct an informal “time audit” and account for whatever spare minutes are possible. Obvious time “holes” include watching television and spending too much time on social media. Turn this time into an exercise session by catching up on a favorite program while logging treadmill time.
  • Execution, not excuses: Once a plan is in place, just get it done. That might mean waking up 15 minutes earlier each morning, or setting aside a few hours on the weekend to prep healthy meals for the week. Resist the temptation to skip workouts or survive on fast food; it will only prolong the negative cycle.
